Biofuels in Asia: An Analysis of Sustainability Options

Confidence in CFL Quality report coverThis report provides a comprehensive, objective regional analysis of key trends and challenges related to the production and use of biofuels in Asia, and highlights strategies through which USAID and its development assistance partners can promote sustainable biofuels that can reduce net greenhouse gas emissions while avoiding negative impacts on food security, biodiversity, and local communities. The primary finding is that promoting small-scale, decentralized production of biofuels can help bring modern energy more quickly, effectively, and cheaply to an estimated half a billion people in rural Asia. In contrast, expansion of large-scale biofuels production for transport fuels in Asia has limited economic or environmental viability. The report proposes several specific actions that USAID and other development partners can pursue to encourage more sustainable and responsible biofuels production and use in the Asia region.
